Overview : Share Custom Google Maps™ and Placemarks via Email
After signing in to Google™ with your Google™ account you can personalize and share your custom Google Maps™ with friends and family.

Pre-Requisites for Using My Maps.
1.1 – Google™ Account
To use the My Maps feature of Google Maps™ you will need an existing Google™ account. Alternatively, you can create a new Google™ account.
1.2 - Sign in to Google Maps™ with your Google™ Account
(a) Open the Google Maps™ website in your web browser.
(b) Click the Sign in link in the top right hand corner of the page to sign in to Google™ with your Google™ account.

(c) Enter your Google™ account Email and Password details and click the
button.

Send a Custom Google™ Map - “Created by me” – As a Link via Email
If not already signed in, sign in to Google™ with your Google™ Account. Open the Google Maps™ website in your web browser and select the My Maps <tab>.
(a) In the “Created by me” list of maps, ensure the Map you would like to share is selected (
). If not, click using your left mouse button the check box (
) to the left of the Map title in the list to select the Map.
(b) To send the currently displayed custom map, click the “Send” link above the top right hand corner of the map to open the “SEND” options.

(c) Enter a “To” email address and a “From” email address {mandatory}.
(d) Customise the email message {optional}
Note
For example, you could personalise the first line of text at the start of the message: -
“Hi Kevin, I’d like to share a Google Maps link with you.”
(e) Click the
button to send the email message.
Note
If a specific placemark, line or shape on the custom map is selected with its Info Window open at the time the “Send” link is clicked, the same placemark, line or shape will also be selected with its Info Window open when the link in the generated email is clicked.
Send a Custom Google™ Map - “Created by others” – As a Link via Email
Open the Google Maps™ website in your web browser.
(a) Enter a search term and click the
button to search Google Maps™. In this example, “Sydney Bridge Climb”.

(b) Click the “See user-created content” link below the list of search results in the Search Results <tab> to the left of the map.


(c) Browse through the list of search results in the Search Results <tab> to the left of the map. The search results consist mainly of individual placemarks, lines or shapes from maps created by other Google Maps™ users.
(d) Select a placemark from the list of search results.
(e) To view the map that contains this placemark, click the title of the map (green hyperlink).
(f) To send the currently displayed custom map, click the “Send” link above the top right hand corner of the map to open the “SEND” options.


(g) Enter a “To” email address and a “From” email address {mandatory}.
(h Customise the email message {optional}
Note
For example, you could personalise the first line of text at the start of the message: -
“Hi Kevin, I’d like to share a Google Maps link with you.”
(e) Click the
button to send the email message.

If a specific placemark, line or shape on the custom map is selected with its Info Window open at the time the “Send” link is clicked, the same placemark, line or shape will also be selected with its Info Window open when the link in the generated email is clicked.
Send Details for an Individual Placemark – As a Link via Email
Open the Google Maps™ website in your web browser.
(a) Enter a search term and click the
button to search Google Maps™. In this example, “Sydney Bridge Climb”.

(b) Click the “See user-created content” link below the list of search results in the Search Results <tab> to the left of the map.


(c) Browse through the list of search results in the Search Results <tab> to the left of the map. The search results consist mainly of individual placemarks, lines or shapes from maps created by other Google Maps™ users.
(d) Select a placemark from the list of search results.
(e) To view the details for this Individual placemark, click the “more info >>” link to the right of the placemark title.
(f) To send the currently displayed individual placemark details, click the “Send” link above the top right hand corner of the map to open the “SEND” options.

(g) To include an alternative placemark or to send all the placemark search results click the drop down arrow and make your selection.
(h) Enter a “To” email address and a “From” email address {mandatory}.
(i) Customise the email message {optional}
Note
For example, you could personalise the first line of text at the start of the message: -
“Hi Kevin, I’d like to share a Google Maps link with you.”
(j) Click the
button to send the email message.
(k) You may be prompted to type the characters that you see in a picture before the email can be sent.

Note
- At the release date of this document the send “All search results” option returned only the details of the currently displayed individual placemark.
- At the release date of this document the cursor was not visible when placed in the input fields.
